And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

PSHE and RSE curriculum statement
We work hard to ensure that our children are equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead to confident, happy and active lives. Our PSHE and RSE curriculum plays a crucial part in ensuring that our children understand what healthy lifestyle’s both mentally and physically look like. We want our children to form positive and respectful relationships and embrace difference and diversity.
Our curriculum design ensures that our children enjoy a breadth of experience and exposure, with a timeline of topics designed to ensure culture and diversity are interwoven in every key stage. We have adopted the PSHE Matters Framework for a basis for our PSHE teaching and it is supplemented with CWP resources for Relationships and Sex Education. While we have a robust skills progression and long term plan across key stages, our approach allows flexibility to current affairs highlighting the importance of issues, including Black Lives Matter and refugees. We are developing new and updating current themed weeks such as SHINE Week, Enterprise Week, Fairtrade, Anti-bullying Week and ensure that these themes are presented to the children in a progressive way across phases. These layers of the curriculum ensure that the children are taught the skills and knowledge to develop informed opinions and consider facts to make considered conclusions across a wide range of subject matter.
Valuable experiences including visitors and visits are welcomed where possible to enrich the curriculum, especially when learning about people and organisations that help us to be healthy, safe, moral citizens.
Integral to our PSHE and RSE curriculum are the school values of: RESPECT, RESILIENCE, HONESTY, CARING and COOPERATION. Reflection of our school values and Christian values is woven through the learning journey of our pupils.
Mental health and emotional wellbeing feature highly throughout our curriculum so that children develop strategies to cope and when and where to get help with negative emotions. Our children are encouraged to self-reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of shaping minds and futures.
Key Information about RSE for Parents and Carers
As you may already be aware, the Department for Education has announced changes to Relationships and Sex Education following nationwide consultation. These changes came into effect from September 2020 and all schools will be required to comply with the updated requirements.
The new guidance focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships. The video presentation below explains how we approach RSE at Calow.
Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up will give children and young people the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and help them take responsibility for their own well-being.
In the Spring Term during our PSHE lessons the children will be covering ‘Relationship and Sex Education’ using the Derbyshire PSHE Matters units ‘Relationships’ and ‘Growing Up’. We will also be using a range of books and video clips to support the learning. Please see the list of resources within the RSE leaflets for each year group that can be downloaded below.
Other useful resources can be found at the bottom of this page include our school policy for PSHE and RSE, information about menstruation, some home learning ideas and results from our consultation with parents.
